This technique has a simple and understandable name "heel-toe". It is used for smoother high-speed to low-speed transitions, as well as by riders for "drifting", more specifically, for a controlled skid. This approach also includes double-declutching.

What is it and why it is needed?

The trick "heel-toe" is a race driving technique. It enables drivers to quickly and painlessly reduce transmission applying brakes. And what will this method give you if it is used in life? Engine, gearbox, as well as rotational speed interact in a certain way, and this method allows to avoid jolts when the transmission decreases. When skidding, this technique helps you significantly improve the controllability of the car.

The Basics of this method

"Heel-toe" consists of four steps:

  1. The method of double-declutching. So, prior to entering a turn slightly slow down. Press the clutch and shift transmission to neutral, then release the clutch. Then again start to slow down and at the same time put the heel on the accelerator pedal, do not remove the toe from the throttle, then raise the engine speed so as to synchronize it with the speed of the wheels. Why do you need to do so? Because without synchronization of engine speed with speed of the wheels when switching to "lowered", it will cause a car to jerk leading to the uncontrolled loss of tire grip.
  2. After you successfully completed the previous step, you have to go to the next step. You need to turn the steering wheel until it stops following the direction of steering. It is important to keep enough inertia when entering a corner, this is necessary in order to cause skidding (oversteer).
  3. Here the main thing is not to miss the moment when engine RPM and wheel speed are equal. Then press the clutch and switch to "lowered". Double-declutching is not necessary to do, but it can increase the service life and thereby reduce the wear of the clutch. You can use the parking brake (handbrake), if the inertia of the car and decrease of wheel spin using manual transmission will not allow you to get into the skid (oversteer).
  4. And now press accelerator pedal, but do not push yourself too hard, because it is needed in order to keep a car skidding, and control the oversteer. And do not forget to steer (skid counteraction) so that the vehicle is sliding, and is not starting to rotate. Then everything is simple - control your gas pedal and drive. And do not overdo it, or a car can fly off the road.

Having learnt such technique, you can significantly improve your driving skills. In addition, this method will not be redundant, because, as it was mentioned above, it helps to improve the controllability of the car when driving on curves.

If you decide to master this technique we strongly recommend to use specialized places for such purposes. But in any case, not in the city. Remember that road safety is above all!
